Is CBD "Cannabidiol" An Exit Drug Or Gateway Drug In The Treatment Of Alcoholism And Drug Addiction?
Anecdotal testimonies from CBD users claim that CBD cuts cravings for alcohol resulting in the alcoholic's ability to quit the habit with few side effects. Alcohol addiction is a form of sugar addiction. Aside from the intoxication effect, sugar addiction in any form can wreak havoc on the body, blood chemistry and internal organs, namely the brain, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. Alcoholism causes behavioral and cognitive deterioration which contributes to the alcoholic's desire to drink more as they lose count of how many drinks they've consumed in a sitting. Alcoholism is a neurodegenerative disease where the neurons in the brain are damaged or die as a result. CBD is not a DRUG. CBD is a super food and is not intended to be taken as a cure or preventative medicine. See full disclosure below.

This video answers all the basic questions about CBD:
Several Studies Cited Below Tell of a Positive Future for CBD for Possible Treatment of Alcoholism:
CBD transdermal delivery (the CBD patch) has been studied and found to be effective in treating alcoholism in lab rodents. A very poignant study was performed on rodents and published in the Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior Science Journal. Cannabidiol was administered to rats by topical gel and injection. This study's abstract can be found at projectcbd.org.
Two interesting discoveries emerged from this study:
1. CBD has neuroprotection capabilities for the neurons in the brain and the nervous system against the destructive effects of alcohol consumption in rodents.
2. The transdermal patch delivery system is a more convenient, accurate and sustainable method for CBD therapy for alcoholics. It's a set it and forget it form of CBD treatment.
A new study published in the September 2014 issue of the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism has found convincing conclusions that cannabidiol, or CBD for short, possibly can offer extremely effective medicinal benefits for alcoholics in diminishing relapse behavior in abstaining drinkers.
In a 2015 publication of Substance Abuse: Research and Treatment and article entitled "Cannabidiol as an Intervention for Addictive Behaviors: A Systematic Review of the Evidence" revealed that CBD has some mysterious regulating abilities on the neural circuits involved in drug addiction. Here is an excerpt from the study:
"CBD may have therapeutic properties on opioid, cocaine and psychostimulant addiction and some preliminary data suggest that it may beneficial in cannabis and tobacco addictions in humans.
In another study published in 2014 by the International and interdisciplinary biology journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine, it was unveiled that CBD is an antioxidant and it protects the liver from acute alcohol induced steatosis otherwise known in layman's terms as fatty liver disease caused from excessive alcohol abuse. The study found that CBD breaks down the fats in the liver properly and disposes of the liver cells damaged by alcohol. CBD was even found to protect the liver in binge drinking mice! There are more studies touting that CBD has the ability to assist in the lowering of BAC or Blood Alcohol Concentrations in drinkers post-consumption.
This was revealed in an older study published in 1979 in Volume 66 of Psychopharmacology, titled: "Interaction of Cannabidiol and Alcohol in Humans." So that study tested people who consumed alcohol and CBD next to people who just consumed the alcohol alone. And the results of the study showed that the group who consumed the CBD along with the alcohol lowered their BAC Blood Alcohol Concentrations but not so in the participants who consumed alcohol only.
The Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience Department of the Scripps Research Institute, and the University of Maryland School of Pharmacology, studied the consequences and reactions on animals with lab induced alcohol and cocaine addictions when CBD was administered in a controlled environment. Here is an excerpt of that medical abstract report:
“Drug addiction is a chronically relapsing disorder. Susceptibility to relapse can be traced to multiple factors: craving elicited by drug-related cues, anxiety, hypersensitivity to stress, and impaired impulse control. Relapse prevention treatments that concurrently target these vulnerability states may offer significant clinical advantages.
Cannabidiol (CBD), the main non-psychoactive component of cannabis sativa, may provide such a profile of actions. CBD reduced ethanol and cocaine seeking in animal models of relapse during 7-days of treatment. Remarkably, drug seeking remained fully attenuated as late as 5 months after treatment termination.
CBD also reduced anxiety-like behavior as measured in the elevated plus maze test, both during and after CBD treatment. Finally CBD reversed high impulsivity, measured by a delay discounting task, in rats with an ethanol dependence history.
CBD neither interfered with behaviors motivated by non-addictive natural reward, nor altered spontaneous activity.
The findings reveal two unique clinically relevant dimensions that characterize the actions of CBD: (1) beneficial actions relevant for multiple vulnerability states associated with drug craving and relapse, and (2) long-lasting effects with only brief treatment. Thus, CBD may exert neuroregulatory actions that restore normal function to brain regulating reward, incentive motivation, impulsivity, stress and anxiety.”
In summary, we are discovering that these preliminary studies suggest CBD may moderate the damaging effects of alcoholism such as, adverse psychological, neural degenerative and liver damaging effects.
CBD has brain and neural recovery processes that are only beginning to be understood by medical science. These are exciting times for the medical cannabis movement.
